What Grows in the Dung

The Cow's Body as Entheogenic Substrate, the Unbroken Pre-Colonial Thread, and the Erasure That Followed

The previous essay in this series established that Yasna 29 and Bhāgavata Purāṇa 10.1 preserve two branches of a single Proto-Indo-Iranian narrative template: a sacred bovine, embodying a suffering world, appeals to divinity, which responds by sending a protector. The structural argument was textual. This essay makes the material argument.

The Soma Sanitization Hypothesis holds that colonial-era scholarship and the Arya Samaj reformers of the 1875—1925 period systematically removed entheogenic knowledge from the Vedic interpretive tradition. Any hypothesis about erasure carries its own falsifiability test: if colonial-era mechanisms are responsible for the suppression, then the pre-colonial record should contain what was erased. A knowledge system that was always absent cannot have been sanitized. Only a knowledge system that was present, continuous, and institutionally embedded before the rupture constitutes evidence of deliberate suppression.

The pre-colonial record is not clean. It is extensively dirty — which is exactly what the hypothesis requires.

From a pre-Islamic Islamic scholar quoting Patanjali in 1030 CE, to Mughal state records documenting datura-cannabis preparations at the imperial court in the 1590s, to stone temple programs carved 600 years before the East India Company existed: the knowledge was there. It was continuous. It was institutional. The question is not whether it existed. The question is how it was removed.

This essay proceeds in two movements. The first traces the ecological argument: Psilocybe cubensis grows in cattle dung in South Asia, the Rigveda’s Soma Mandala equates the cow with soma, and the pharmacological profile of the entheogenic hypothesis is more consistent with the hymns’ descriptions than the mainstream Ephedra hypothesis. The second movement — new to this draft — presents the pre-colonial evidentiary thread in full: the dated sources from 1000 BCE through 1590 CE that document continuous entheogenic knowledge in Indian civilization, the external witnesses who recorded what was later denied, and the specific institutional mechanisms by which the erasure was accomplished in the 50-year window between 1875 and 1925.


I. The Distribution — What Actually Grows Where

Psilocybe cubensis is a confirmed, documented presence across South Asia. Its known Indian localities include Orissa, Kerala (Munnar, Arippa, Muthanga, Brahmangiri, Thirunelly), Tamil Nadu (Madras, Guindy), and the Punjab lowlands. A 2023 PubMed Central review identifies six described species of psilocybin-containing fungi in India. The species is specifically associated with cattle dung and water buffalo dung in Asian populations. The Panaeolus genus — particularly Panaeolus cyanescens — is similarly documented in South Asian cattle-dung environments and contains psilocybin and psilocin. The Mycological Society of India’s Punjab field surveys (2007—2011) documented 172 collections of coprophilous agaricoid mushrooms from dung of domesticated and wild herbivorous animals.

In 2025, a Psilocybe species was recorded for the first time in the Indian Himalayas — at 2,200 to 3,200 meters in the Dhauladhar range, near grazing grounds, representing a northward extension of over 1,500 kilometers from the previously known Indian range. This elevation and geographic corridor is precisely the ecological zone through which proto-Indo-Aryan communities passed during their southward migrations. The iNaturalist report notes no known traditional use among local Himalayan communities — an absence that, given the evidence assembled in this essay, is not evidence of historical absence. It is evidence of the sanitization’s reach.

The ecology is not in question. Psilocybin-containing coprophilous fungi grow where Indo-Iranian pastoral communities lived, in association with the animals those communities made sacred. The hypothesis is not that these fungi were the only component of soma. The hypothesis is that their presence in the cattle-dung ecosystem — and the intimate relationship between the pastoral community and that ecosystem — is not incidental to the cow’s eventual sanctification in both the Zoroastrian and Vaishnava traditions.


II. The Rigveda’s Ninth Mandala — The Cow as Soma

The Rigveda’s ninth Mandala is the Soma Mandala: 114 hymns dedicated entirely to the pressing and praise of the sacred plant. The effect described across these hymns — divine vision, dissolution of ordinary perception, encounter with the devas, the experience of immortality — is phenomenologically consistent with 5-HT2A receptor agonism. It is not consistent with ephedrine, which is a stimulant producing enhanced alertness and mild euphoria, not mystical experience.

Within this mandala, the cow occupies a structurally inexplicable position if soma is simply an Ephedra preparation. Atharva Veda XII.4.38 states directly: “The cow is Aditi, the earth, the atmosphere, all plants and herbs: the cow is everything which exists.” The grammar of the Soma Mandala repeatedly collapses the distinction between the plant and the bovine. Terence McKenna, in Food of the Gods (1992), proposed the ecological explanation: the Rigveda’s 9th Mandala describes the cow as the embodiment of soma because the sacred plant grows in the cow’s dung. The equation is botanical, not metaphorical.

This hypothesis has been rejected by mainstream Vedic scholarship on methodological grounds — the absence of explicit mycological taxonomy in a Bronze Age document. This objection is formally correct. It is not a refutation. Bronze Age communities documenting their ritual practice in liturgical hymns did not write like 21st-century mycologists. What they wrote — 114 hymns describing a plant associated with the cow that produces divine vision — is consistent with the ecological hypothesis. The methodological objection amounts to: we cannot prove it in the way we would prove a modern claim. That is true. It does not establish that the claim is false.


III. The Ephedra Impossibility

The mainstream scholarly consensus identifies Ephedra — specifically Ephedra gerardiana, called somalata in Sanskrit — as the most likely soma candidate. The BMAC archaeological evidence from Margiana includes ceramic bowls with Ephedra residues and straining equipment consistent with haoma preparation. The botanical evidence is real and should not be dismissed.

It has a fatal pharmacological problem. Ephedra is a stimulant. Its active compounds — ephedrine and pseudoephedrine — are adrenergic agonists producing increased heart rate, heightened alertness, and mild euphoria. They do not produce the phenomenology described in the Soma Mandala. They cannot produce it. 5-HT2A agonism — the mechanism of serotonergic psychedelics — is required to generate the encounter with devas, the cosmic vision, the experience of immortality that the hymns describe with consistent precision across 114 separate compositions. Ephedra has no significant 5-HT2A agonist activity.

The Ephedra hypothesis survives in the literature not because it is pharmacologically adequate but because it is archaeologically documentable and professionally comfortable. The alternative — that the Rigveda’s central ritual involved psilocybin mushrooms or other serotonergic substances — is professionally uncomfortable in ways the Ephedra hypothesis is not. As the Harvard scholar Moore Gerety has noted, “the shifting candidates proposed for the authentic soma of Vedic India have neatly paralleled the drug zeitgeist of the twentieth century.” The identification question has been epistemically contaminated by successive interpretive frameworks. The pharmacological constraint — that the described phenomenology requires 5-HT2A agonism — is the test that the Ephedra hypothesis fails and that the entheogenic hypothesis does not.


IV. The Zoroastrian Side — Haoma and the Schism

Essay II of this series documented a detail whose implications for the entheogenic argument are decisive: Zarathushtra’s Gathas contain a passage where he critiques the misuse of haoma — not the plant itself, but its use by what appear to be the proto-Vedic priestly communities he was opposing. Both branches of the Indo-Iranian tradition maintained the central ritual of pressing and consuming haoma/soma through the schism. What changed was which cosmological framework the plant’s revelations were placed within.

The BMAC haoma-preparation evidence suggests that by the period of the BMAC culture, the ritual preparation was already a composite: Ephedra and cannabis residues together, with straining equipment. Cannabis does produce significant consciousness alteration, though not the specifically mystical 5-HT2A phenomenology of the most ecstatic Soma Mandala passages. The composite preparation hypothesis — that haoma/soma was never a single plant but a preparation whose components varied by priestly lineage — is consistent with both the botanical evidence and the pharmacological requirements of the hymns. Multiple active agents in a single preparation; different lineages emphasizing different components; the coprophilous psilocybin fungi providing the 5-HT2A dimension that Ephedra cannot.

What the BMAC evidence cannot tell us is the coprophilous dimension. Psilocybin degrades rapidly. It does not survive in ceramic residues the way Ephedra alkaloids do. The absence of psilocybin in the archaeological record is not evidence of absence from the practice — it is evidence of the limits of archaeobotany applied to fresh organic material consumed immediately upon preparation. The hypothesis must be assessed on the totality of evidence, not on the subset that survives in ceramic bowls.


V. The Unbroken Thread — Pre-Colonial Evidence

The preceding sections establish the ecological and pharmacological plausibility of the entheogenic hypothesis. But the Soma Sanitization Hypothesis requires more than plausibility. It requires that the knowledge was present and continuous before the rupture — not as speculation in the Vedic hymns, but as living institutional practice across the full span of pre-colonial Indian civilization. If the 1875—1925 reform period suppressed something, that something must be documentable before 1875. The following four nodes of evidence constitute the evidentiary spine.

A. Al-Biruni Quoting Patanjali (1030 CE) — The External Witness

The single most important piece of evidence in this evidentiary chain is an Islamic scholar’s report of a Hindu yoga text, written in Arabic in approximately 1030 CE.

Al-Biruni (c. 973—1050 CE) was a Khwarazmian polymath who spent years in the Ghaznavid court, learned Sanskrit directly, explicitly criticized prior Arabic sources on India as insufficient, and produced the Kitab al-Hind as a scholarly work of the highest order. He had no institutional stake in the Arya Samaj’s 19th-century reform program. He had no stake in colonial philology’s normalization of Vedic religion for Victorian consumption. He was an external observer applying his own rigorous methodology — he was, in his own words, disgusted by scholars who failed to engage primary sources.

In the Kitab al-Hind, Al-Biruni transmits Patanjali’s yoga system and identifies four recognized paths to liberation. The fourth path is Rasayana — described as procedures involving drugs, resembling alchemy in the obtainment of what is by nature impossible. He is quoting Patanjali. The Yoga Sutras — the most authoritative classical text of the Hindu yoga tradition — explicitly named a drug-based liberation path as a recognized fourth option alongside tapas (austerity), mantra, and samadhi.

An Islamic scholar in 1030 CE, quoting Patanjali, documents drug-based liberation as a recognized fourth path to moksha. This is 845 years before Dayananda Saraswati declared that soma cannot be an intoxicant because intoxicants destroy the intellect. The timeline of suppression is now documentable. The thing suppressed is now named in primary sources that predate the suppression by nearly nine centuries.

The significance of the Al-Biruni citation is not only its content but its methodology. Al-Biruni was not projecting — he was reporting. He was not a practitioner with a stake in the practice’s legitimacy. He was a scholar documenting what an authoritative Indian text said. His account of Rasayana as a recognized liberation path in Patanjali means this knowledge was not occult, not marginal, not disavowed — it was sufficiently mainstream to be included in the classical yoga canon that Al-Biruni was summarizing for his Arabic readers.

B. The Kularnava Tantra (10th—13th Century CE) — The Theological Codification

The Kularnava Tantra, composed between the 10th and 13th centuries CE — 600 to 900 years before colonialism — is the foundational text of the Kaula Shakta tradition. It prescribes the Pañcamakāra: the five ritual elements (Madya, Māṃsa, Matsya, Mudrā, Maithuna) as liberation technologies for qualified practitioners.

The text is explicit. It does not describe these substances as metaphors. It states: “man must be taught to rise by means of those very things which are the cause of his fall.” It prescribes specific substances — including cannabis (Vijaya) — for specific practitioners with specific ritual procedures. “The devotee meditates on Isvari after using hemp (Vijaya)” is not a metaphorical statement. It is a prescription. The theological justification is non-dualist: the substances considered impure by orthodox Brahminism are precisely those whose ritual use dissolves the ego’s attachment to the category of pure/impure. Transgression is the technology.

The Kaulajnananirnaya, attributed to Matsyendranath — the founder of the Kaula tradition and ancestral figure in the Nath lineage deeply embedded in pre-colonial Punjab — describes transgressive substances as consciousness technologies within the same framework. These are not fringe texts from disavowed traditions. They are the primary documents of lineages that shaped Kashmiri Shaivism, the Nath tradition, and the wider Shaiva world that Xuanzang documented as socially dominant in 7th-century India.

C. Abu’l-Fazl’s Ain-i-Akbari (1590s CE) — The State Record

Abu’l-Fazl, Akbar’s court historian, compiled the Ain-i-Akbari between 1589 and 1598 as an encyclopedic record of the Mughal Empire and its subject populations. As the official documentation of the Mughal state — the political authority governing most of the subcontinent 285 years before the Arya Samaj — his testimony on plant use is the most socially authoritative pre-colonial source available.

Abu’l-Fazl documents majun — a preparation combining cannabis and datura flowers alongside poppy seeds, nux vomica, and other ingredients — as widely consumed across the subcontinent. This is not folk practice at the margins of society. Babur’s memoirs document habitual majun consumption before military expeditions, during celebrations, at harvest observations, during victory ceremonies. Babur wrote explicitly that no other drug suited his constitution except majun. The Mughal emperor’s personal substance preference, recorded in his own memoirs, describes a datura-cannabis combination preparation.

This matters for the Soma Sanitization Hypothesis at the institutional level: as late as 1590 CE, the highest court of the pre-colonial Indian subcontinent was documenting — without apology, without the sanitizing interpretive framework of reform — the use of the same plants that would be systematically desacralized 285 years later. The knowledge was not hidden. It was unremarkable. It required no theological justification because no theological challenge to it had yet been organized.

D. Xuanzang (629—645 CE) and Pre-Islamic Temple Culture — The Living Social Reality

Xuanzang’s pilgrimage account (629—645 CE) documents the Kapalikas — the transgressive Shaiva ascetics whose practices involving cremation ground rites and ritual transgression are the embodied precursor to the Kularnava Tantra’s prescriptions — as a living social reality across South Asia, particularly in Varanasi. He observed that in Varanasi, temples of Mahesvara outnumbered Buddhist institutions three to one. The Kaula-Vamachara stream was not a textual tradition awaiting composition. It was a walking, practicing, socially present reality in 7th-century India.

Xuanzang’s external, pre-Islamic testimony is not projectable onto colonial-era categories. He was not interpreting Indian religion through Protestant empiricism or Brahminical respectability politics. He documented what he saw. What he saw was a Shaiva world in which transgressive asceticism — including the practices documented in the Kularnava Tantra — was mainstream and institutionally embedded, a full 1,200 years before the Singh Sabha and Arya Samaj declared it superstition.

VI. The Sanitization — How the Loop Was Broken

The ecological loop the previous essay identified — cow → dung → Psilocybe → soma vision → theology → cow sanctified → protected cow produces more dung → loop continues — is a closed, self-reinforcing system. Breaking it required two simultaneous operations: the botanical identification had to be obscured, and the cow’s sanctification had to be reframed as purely spiritual, stripped of its pharmacological dimension.

Dayananda Saraswati’s Satyarth Prakash (1875) executed the Sanskrit side of this operation. His interpretation of soma as a spiritual abstraction — “something that produces happiness, peace, relaxation and enthusiasm” — was supported by a deliberate Ayurvedic argument: citing Sharngadhar Samhita 4.21, he argued that since a substance destroying intellect is an intoxicant, and since soma is described as enhancing intellect, soma cannot be an intoxicant. This is an internally coherent argument from within the Ayurvedic classificatory system. It is also precisely backwards: it uses Ayurvedic terminology to override Ayurvedic plant knowledge, deploying the tradition’s own vocabulary against its own pharmacopeia.

Max Müller’s program, operating simultaneously from Oxford, provided the scholarly apparatus. His stated commitment to excising the “silly, senseless and savage element” from mythology — and his systematic reinterpretation of all Vedic entheogenic phenomenology as solar or atmospheric metaphor — excluded the pharmacological reading a priori. The methodology did not reach a conclusion against entheogenic soma. It began by assuming that conclusion and built an interpretive system that could only confirm it.

The institutional completion happened in the Singh Sabha movement (1873—1920) and its culmination in the Sikh Gurdwara Act (1925). The Tat Khalsa faction, which won the institutional struggle for Sikh religious authority, condemned the folk practices — plant-based healing, pir veneration, spirit propitiation, the Udasi and Nirmala lineages — that had maintained the older pluralistic knowledge systems. The 1925 Act didn’t just change administrative structures. It formally expelled the lineages whose knowledge practices were the Punjab-specific carriers of the pre-colonial tradition.

The triple operation — Arya Samaj theological reinterpretation, colonial philological exclusion, and Singh Sabha institutional suppression — was complete by 1925. The knowledge that Al-Biruni documented as mainstream in 1030 CE, that Abu’l-Fazl recorded without comment in the 1590s, that the Kularnava Tantra prescribed without apology in the 12th century, was by 1925 classified as superstition, primitivism, or corruption — depending on which reformist tradition was doing the classifying.


VII. The Cow’s Lament, Completed

The previous essay asked why a sacred bovine, appealing to divinity for a protector, became the foundational mytheme of both the Zoroastrian and Vaishnava traditions. The structural answer traced a shared Proto-Indo-Iranian narrative template. The theological answer was that the cow personified the suffering world.

This essay proposes the material answer, which does not replace the others but gives them grounding: the cow’s body was the substrate of the community’s most profound religious experience. The sacred plant grew in its dung. The vision that produced the theology of cosmic order — Asha, Dharma, the divine council, the appointed savior — was generated, in part, through the bovine digestive system. The cow’s lament, in this reading, preserves the trace of a community defending the ecological conditions of its own spiritual practice.

Geush Urvan’s cry — “there is no protector for me” — is the community’s cry when its access to the sacred entheogenic ecosystem was threatened. The cattle-raiders who, in the Gathic world, slaughtered the herd and disrupted the pastoral order were not only economic enemies. They were destroying the substrate. The Zoroastrian prohibition on cattle slaughter — explicit, theologically grounded, persistent across millennia — makes complete sense once the pharmacological dimension is restored. You do not kill the cow because the cow’s body mediates the divine. You protect the cow with the same intensity with which you protect the ritual.

The Rigveda’s warriors who fought for cattle — gavishti, desire for cattle, as a term for battle — were fighting over access to the entheogenic ecosystem as much as over economic resources. The theology of cattle on both sides of the Indo-Iranian schism encodes a real conflict over who controls the substrate. On the Zoroastrian side, the prohibition on slaughter is the theological crystallization of that defense. On the Vedic side, the glorification of the cattle raid is the theological crystallization of that offense.

The cow’s lament is then not only a mythological narrative. It is the preserved memory of what was at stake — written into the liturgical corpus of both traditions, fossilized in the oldest narrative structure that the two branches share, surviving the schism, surviving Zarathushtra’s reform, surviving the Puranic elaboration of the avatara theology, surviving the colonial-era sanitization of its botanical dimensions, surviving until a civilian mycologist with an iNaturalist account photographed a Psilocybe species in the Dhauladhar range in 2025 and uploaded it to a public database.

The stone temples were not edited. The Kularnava Tantra was not burned. Al-Biruni’s Arabic manuscript survived. Abu’l-Fazl’s court records survive. The iNaturalist database is public. The knowledge was not annihilated. It was reclassified — into superstition, metaphor, folk practice, primitive religion — by people who understood that reclassification is the most durable form of erasure. What this essay series is doing is reclassifying it back.

Scholarly Note: Claims, Complications, and Counterevidence

ARGUED BUT REQUIRING FURTHER DEVELOPMENT: (1) That P. cubensis was the primary entheogenic component of Vedic soma — the Wasson-McKenna hypothesis, not mainstream consensus; the BMAC composite preparation is more likely than a single-plant identification; (2) That the cow’s sanctification is causally linked to its role as entheogenic substrate, rather than explained adequately by pastoral economics and mythology alone; (3) That the 2025 Himalayan Psilocybe discovery represents historical continuity with proto-Aryan migration corridors.

COMPLICATIONS TO ACKNOWLEDGE: (1) On datura specifically: a 2024 peer-reviewed article in the Contemplative Journal argues, on textual grounds, that pre-colonial Sanskrit sources deploy datura primarily for hostile magic (vaśīkaraṇa, māraṇa) rather than personal entheogenic vision-questing. The claim that Vajrayāna yogins consumed datura for visions may be a late development. The essay’s use of datura as evidence for the entheogenic complex is therefore more complicated than its use of cannabis or Psilocybe. (2) The Mahanirvana Tantra may date in its current form to the 18th century CE, making it pre-colonial but not deeply so — the Kularnava Tantra is on firmer ground. (3) The soma botanical identity question remains genuinely unresolved across 100+ scholarly proposals. The Sanitization Hypothesis does not require resolving it — it requires that the colonial interpretive apparatus foreclosed the entheogenic hypothesis before it could be adequately investigated, which is documentable.
