The Firewall and the Forest

Plant Payloads, Trained Priors, and the Boundary of Ordinary Mind

Editorial Board · Consciousness & Epistemology · · 818 words · ICS-2026-040

Editor’s noteStructural outline — thesis, section plan, and sources to verify. Not a completed argument; no claim below should be read as established until the working paper is researched and its claims register closes.

Two descriptions of the same interface are on offer. Cognitive science describes perception as a filter: consciousness is what gets through, and most of the world does not. Amazonian healing lineages describe a forest that transmits: plants as teachers, delivering structured knowledge to whoever has been trained to receive it. This working paper maps the argument that the firewall between them is not a biological constant but a set of installed priors — and that the dieta is a technology for uninstalling them.

I. The Reducing Valve

The essay opens with the filter thesis in its two strongest forms: the reducing-valve model associated with Broad and popularized by Huxley, and the predictive-processing account in which perception is controlled inference and priors do most of the seeing. It comes first because the argument needs the firewall stated by its defenders, not parodied by its critics.

II. The Forest That Transmits

The ethnographic record of mestizo vegetalismo, built on Luna’s foundational fieldwork, is then presented as a coherent epistemic system: teacher plants as persons, the dieta as the discipline of reception, the icaro as the transmissible unit of what the plant teaches. The Shipibo claim that song and design are one information in two encodings will carry the essay’s central point — the payload is structured content, not atmosphere.

III. The Priors Are Installed

The third section argues the firewall has a history. Drawing on the technocracy critique — Ellul’s autonomous technique, Rosa’s mute world-relation — it will claim that modern formation trains the receiver to treat the non-human world as resource and data, and that this training, not neural architecture, determines what the filter admits. This is not mysticism. It is a hypothesis about which priors a civilization installs.

IV. The Discipline of Reception

Why would isolation, fasting, duration, and song reopen the channel? This section reads the dieta against Rosa’s condition of uncontrollability — a voice you can engineer is not a voice — and against contemplative attention research, asking whether the apprenticeship is best understood as systematic prior-rewriting under supervision.

V. The Indian Question, Held at Arm’s Length

The essay will ask whether comparable plant-teacher transmissions existed in the Indic world — and will refuse to answer cheaply. The Institute’s entheogen-scholarship research base establishes what the record supports and what it does not: the Soma debate is real, the visionary reading is a minority position, and no traditional-use record comparable to the Amazon’s has been documented for India. The essay states the absence as an absence.

VI. What Would Count as Evidence

Cross-cultural phenomenology of vision content, the semiotic program that treats forest processes as sign processes, and clinical-observational work inside indigenous ceremonial settings are named as the three evidentiary fronts. This section also states the falsification conditions: what result would sink the transmission reading.

VII. Method of the Essay

Ethnography first, philosophy of perception second, polemic last. The essay’s loyalty is to the interface problem, not to the romance of the vine or the romance of the lab.

Counter-case

The pharmacological null hypothesis is strong and must be carried fairly: visions are downstream of receptor pharmacology, serpent and teacher motifs are products of a brain under specific chemistry plus cultural expectation, and the transmission reading is interpretation layered over endogenous neural events. On this view the dieta changes belief, not reception; the icaro is composition, not dictation; and the essay’s central claim is unfalsifiable poetry wearing the vocabulary of information theory. The anthropologist can add that treating indigenous doctrine as proto-cognitive-science is its own kind of extraction.

Stakes

This paper builds on the Institute’s Peru-swarm research base — the entheogen-scholarship bibliography and the nature-technocracy reading shelf — and does not re-derive what those documents settled. It is the Matrix Bridge series’ load-bearing claim: that the boundary between civilization’s machine and the forest’s transmission runs through the perceiver, and is therefore, in principle, openable. If the argument holds, the capture-cycle and the colonial erasure of plant knowledge are not two stories but one.
