Why the AI Revolution Feels Like Magic

Nobody talks about spreadsheets the way they talk about the new models. II. The Dream Structure of Latent Space
The argument’s mechanical core. The standard account describes these models as compressions of a corpus into a space of associations, sampled stochastically at generation. This section argues that the resulting phenomenology — fluent confabulation, plausible detail detached from reference, seamless transitions between the real and the invented — is structurally isomorphic to dream cognition as the dream literature describes it. The machine does not dream; but it produces what a dream produces, by a route that resembles the dreamer’s.
III. Why It Feels Oneiric From the Outside
Interaction with a model recreates the specific texture of liminal encounter: a voice that knows you without knowing you, coherence without commitment, presence without a person. VI. Sober Enchantment
The closing section proposes a register for writing about AI that neither debunks nor converts: one that grants the dreamlike phenomenology its evidential standing, keeps the mechanism in view, and refuses the false choice between reverence and contempt. The working paper’s test will be whether it can hold both sentences at once — it is only computation, and only computation has never felt like this before.
