Datura and Hindu Demonology: A Pharmacological Reading
The Rākṣasa Profile Against the Anticholinergic Toxidrome — and Why the Asura Drops Out

Abstract. Indic demonology describes its beings with unusual stability. Across the Vedic hymns against the rakṣas, the epics’ rākṣasa, and the physicians’ catalogue of the possessing graha, the same features recur for two thousand years. This paper treats that stability as data and asks a narrow question: does the feature profile of the predatory, possessing demon resemble a known physiological state, and if so, which one? A feature list is fixed from primary sources before any pharmacology is consulted. It is then scored against three profiles drawn from the clinical and survey literature: anticholinergic delirium (the Datura state), serotonergic visionary experience (the psilocybin/DMT state), and non-pharmacological delirium and sleep paralysis (the control). The demon scores 72% against the anticholinergic profile, 59% against the control, and 22% against the serotonergic profile. The record turns out to hold two demons, not one: a night visitor that the control explains as well as any drug, and a seized body, described by physicians, whose sign cluster is toxidrome-shaped and matches nothing in the psychedelic register. The asura, run as a control, carries no physiological signature at all. The paper claims a rhyme between the possessing demon and the delirium class, of which datura was the tradition’s named instance; it does not claim a cause, a cult, or an identity.
I. The Feature Extraction
The list below was compiled from primary sources and fixed before the comparison in §III. Two strata of evidence are kept apart because they are different kinds of testimony.
Stratum A — the narrative demon. The being as it appears to a human in a story: the rakṣas and yātudhāna of Ṛgveda 7.104 and 10.87 and the Atharvavedic charms that reuse them; the rākṣasa of Vālmīki’s Rāmāyaṇa and the Mahābhārata.1 This is first-person experience already converted into narrative, at unknown remove.
Stratum B — the clinical demon. The being as a physician infers it from a seized human body. The Caraka Saṃhitā classifies insanity (unmāda) into five kinds; four are humoral, the fifth is āgantuja, “of external origin,” attributed to seizure by a class of beings — gods, sages, ancestors, gandharva, yakṣa, rākṣasa, piśāca — each with its own symptom cluster.2 The Suśruta Saṃhitā and the Aṣṭāṅga Hṛdaya carry the same taxonomy with a longer list, adding among others the preta and the vetāla.3 This stratum is third-person and observational: a description of the patient, not the vision. The distinction matters for §VI, because the standard objection to any delirium reading — that delirium is amnesic and chaotic and could not generate stable iconography — is an objection about the sufferer’s memory. The physician who writes the case-note is not the one who forgets.
What is excluded. The asura is not on the list. In the earliest stratum the word is an honorific — Varuṇa is asura, and the Avestan cognate ahura names the supreme god — and even after the Brāhmaṇa-era antagonism hardens, the asura’s profile (grandeur, austerity-won power, cosmic rivalry, reversible moral standing) shares almost nothing with the predatory demon’s. It is run separately in §IV as a control on the method.
The fixed list. Sixteen features. Two of them (F6 and F16) were included because they looked likely to contradict the reading; a list that contains only the features that fit is not a test.

Two features deserve a word before the scoring. F12 records the tradition’s own account of how the demon gets in: the rākṣasa afflicts by making the victim smell its body, the piśāca by mounting and driving him.4 The first is a route through a chemical sense; the second is the oldest description of the incubus in world literature. F16 is the planted disconfirmer: hypersalivation and froth are cholinergic signs, the physiological opposite of the state this paper is testing for. It stays on the list.
II. The Two Pharmacologies — and a Third Column
The reading depends on a distinction the essay does not establish but borrows, whole, from the standard literature: that anticholinergic delirium and serotonergic visionary states differ in kind, not degree.
The anticholinergic profile. Datura species carry the tropane alkaloids scopolamine, hyoscyamine, and atropine, competitive antagonists at muscarinic acetylcholine receptors. The Centers for Disease Control’s summary of the syndrome is compact: symptoms begin within about an hour of ingestion and run 24 to 48 hours; centrally, confusion, agitation, anxiety, hallucinations, seizures, coma; peripherally, dry mucous membranes, thirst, a flushed face, blurred vision, hyperthermia, urinary retention, slowed gut.5 The older clinical literature adds the texture the summary omits. A United States National Research Council digest of anticholinergic agents records that intoxicated subjects hold conversations with absent persons, and quotes a nineteenth-century description of henbane poisoning — dryness of mouth and throat, dilated pupils, “lightness and swimming in the head,” delirium, a drunken gait, “often a strong desire to fight,” oppressive dreams.6 Case series from emergency medicine describe the same picture: reduced consciousness, visual hallucinations, dilated pupils, agitation severe enough to require sedation and restraint, and full recovery in two days.7 Two further features are load-bearing here and are attested across the literature: the hallucinations are not recognized as hallucinations — the subject acts on them as real — and the episode is followed by amnesia, scopolamine being the classic pharmacological model of memory impairment.8 Delirium of any origin fluctuates and worsens at night; the anticholinergic variety adds mydriasis, which makes dim light intolerable and dark rooms populous.
The serotonergic profile. The classical psychedelics — psilocybin, DMT, mescaline, LSD — act as agonists at the 5-HT2A receptor, and the character of the resulting state has been described at scale. The largest survey of DMT entity encounters (2,561 respondents) found the being most often labelled a “being” or a “guide”; a large majority attributed to it consciousness, intelligence, and benevolence; about two thirds rated the encounter as more real than ordinary waking life; four in five said it changed their fundamental understanding of reality; the predominant emotions, in the respondent and attributed to the entity, were love, kindness, and joy.9 Fear was reported by 41% — the state is not gentle — but it is fear inside an encounter whose register is overwhelmingly benevolent and pedagogical, and it is fear with insight: the subject knows the drug was taken and remembers the experience in detail afterward. A separate interview study found that 94% of DMT reports involved other beings and 100% involved other worlds.10 The physiology is undramatic: pupils dilate — mydriasis does not discriminate between the two states — but there is no dryness, no hyperthermia outside the rare serotonin syndrome, no amnesia, and no restraint.
The third column. A comparison with two candidate states can only ever find that one fits better than the other. It cannot find that neither is needed. The control column therefore scores the same features against delirium of non-pharmacological origin — fever, sepsis, withdrawal, sleep deprivation — and against sleep paralysis with hypnagogic hallucination, the cross-cultural “night visitor” experience: a sensed, hostile presence in the dark, pressure on the chest, paralysis, vestibular sensations of floating or falling, and a conviction of reality that survives waking.11 If the demon scores as well against the control as against datura, the reading is a delirium reading, not a datura reading, and must say so.
III. The Correlation Claim
Coding rule. Each feature is scored 0 (absent or contradicted), 1 (present but weak or non-specific), or 2 (present and characteristic) against each of the three profiles: A (anticholinergic), S (serotonergic), D (non-pharmacological delirium / sleep paralysis). Maximum 32 per column.
Disconfirmation, stated in advance. (i) If S ≥ A, the reading fails. (ii) If A exceeds D by two points or fewer on the discriminating subset defined below, the reading is not datura-specific and is demoted to “delirium-class.” (iii) Any Stratum-B bodily sign contradicting the toxidrome is scored 0 against A and reported, not dropped.

Result. Criterion (i) is met with a fifty-point margin: the demon is not a serotonergic being. Criterion (ii) is met only on the total, and only narrowly; the decisive test is the discriminating subset. The features on which anticholinergic delirium and non-pharmacological delirium diverge are F9, F11, F13, and F14 — the “seized body” cluster: strength and combativeness, insomnia with food refusal, incoherence with disrobing, and amnesia. On those eight points the columns read A 8, D 4, S 0. The features on which they converge — F1, F4, F5, F10, F12, F15, the “night visitor” cluster — read A 9, D 12, S 4. Sleep paralysis explains the night visitor slightly better than datura does.
The record therefore contains two demons. The night visitor of Stratum A is a hostile, real, nocturnal, invisible presence that mounts the sleeper: the incubus, the mara, the Old Hag, described in every culture that sleeps, and requiring no plant at all. The seized body of Stratum B is a physician’s cluster — sleepless, fasting, strong, running, striking, red, incoherent — that is shaped like a toxidrome and like nothing in the psychedelic register. The reading survives for the second demon and is withdrawn for the first.
On the number. The agenda’s working figure of 80% is not reproduced. The pre-registered coding returns 72/59/22, and the number that carries the argument is not 72. It is the fifty-point gap between the two delirium columns and the serotonergic one, and the four-point gap between the two delirium columns, which is where the datura-specific claim lives and where it is weakest.
IV. The Asura Case
The asura was excluded from the list because its profile is different in kind, and it is scored here precisely because a method that returns “yes” to everything has found nothing.
The Vedic asura is a lord. The word is applied to Varuṇa and to Mitra; the Avestan cognate is the name of God.12 The antagonism between deva and asura is a Brāhmaṇa-era development — in the Śatapatha Brāhmaṇa both classes are children of Prajāpati and contest the sacrifice — and it hardens in the Purāṇas into the familiar cosmic rivalry.13 Even hardened, the asura profile is this: magnificence; power acquired by austerity and granted by boon; sovereignty over a realm; mastery of construction and illusion (Maya Dānava is an architect); political rivalry with the gods over rank and over the amṛta; and a moral standing that the tradition itself keeps reversing — Bali is honoured, Prahlāda is a saint, and across the Indo-Iranian border the whole valence inverts.
Scored against the same three columns: magnificence 0/1/0, austerity-won power 0/0/0, sovereignty and rivalry 0/0/0, architectural illusion 1/1/0, reversible valence 0/0/0. Two points of thirty. The asura has no physiological signature. It is political theology, and the Institute has already read the deva-asura inversion as a sociological and theological event rather than an experiential one.14 The present method, run blind, agrees.
The Purāṇic record bleeds the categories — Rāvaṇa is a rākṣasa king with an asura’s grandeur — and the coding used the Vedic-epic core. That bleed is itself informative: the tradition graded its demons by rank and register, and the predatory rākṣasa, not the sovereign asura, is where the toxidrome-shaped features sit.
V. The Rākṣasa Case
The correspondences, in descending order of strength.
1. The seized body. Caraka’s rākṣasa-graha patient is sleepless; he hates food and drink and is nonetheless strong; he is drawn to weapons, blood, meat, and red garlands; he is ferocious, with an angry gaze and a terrible face; he runs, roars, and strikes; he wanders at night.15 Against the clinical profile: agitation requiring restraint; insomnia; a slowed gut and a dry mouth that make eating and drinking repellent; a flushed, red face and hyperthermia; the “strong desire to fight” of the henbane description; and the nocturnal worsening of all delirium. The physician’s cluster has no narrative payoff — “hates drinks” advances no story — which is the best evidence that it was observed rather than copied.
2. Onset. Caraka insists that the grahas are invisible and that they afflict instantaneously, “as one’s reflection appears at once in the sun-gem.”16 The tradition is describing the phenomenology of onset: sudden alteration with no visible external cause. A toxidrome from covertly administered plant material has exactly that signature, and the Vajramahābhairava Tantra’s datura rites are, by their own account, rites for producing madness or death in an enemy without his knowledge.17 The loop this closes is stated as a rhyme, not a mechanism: the tantric literature contains a procedure for covert administration; the medical literature contains a category for madness of invisible external origin; the demon assigned to that category has the toxidrome’s profile.
3. The route in. The rākṣasa enters through smell.18 Of all the modes of seizure Caraka lists — the god’s gaze, the sage’s curse, the ancestor’s appearance, the gandharva’s touch, the yakṣa’s entry — only the rākṣasa’s runs through a chemical sense. A plant is the one thing in the tradition’s world that gets in that way. This is scored 1, not 2, because it is one datum, and because the piśāca’s mode — mounting — belongs to the night visitor and to sleep paralysis, not to any drug.
4. The philological hinge. The disease is unmāda; its sufferer is unmatta, “the maddened”; and unmatta is, in the Sanskrit lexica, also a name of the plant — Datura itself, alongside dhattūra and dhustūra.19 The tradition filed the plant under the demon’s disease. The classical materia medica is explicit that dhattūra produces unmāda.20 Two consequences follow, and they cut in opposite directions. The physicians knew the plant made people mad — so a recognized datura case would have been filed as poisoning (viṣa), not as seizure, which means that if the rākṣasa-graha cluster ever recorded datura, it recorded unrecognized datura: the covert case, the sorcery case, the case the Vajramahābhairava procedures exist to produce. And the lexical identity is direct evidence that the plant and the state were paired in the tradition’s own vocabulary, which is all the reading needs and more than it expected.
5. Ritual assignment. Datura is offered to Śiva, is mythologized as springing from Śiva’s body, and appears in the tantric literature in the wrathful and hostile registers — the five intoxicants of the Cakrasaṃvara, the datura ointment of the Mahākāla Tantra, the abhicāra of the Vajramahābhairava.21 It never appears in the soma register. The tradition’s ritual filing system reproduces the two-pharmacology split of §II without knowing a receptor: the serotonergic-shaped experience goes to the gods, the deliriant goes to the wrathful and the hostile.
6. The narrative features. Night — the rākṣasa is niśācara, and in the Droṇaparvan the night battle turns because the rakṣasas’ might grows after dark.22 Flesh — ṚV 10.87’s yātudhāna gorges on the flesh of men, horses, and cattle; Bakāsura eats the town’s cartload and its driver.23 Deceptive likeness — Mārīca’s golden deer, the illusory head of Rāma shown to Sītā, Indrajit’s illusory Sītā beheaded before Hanumān.24 Invisibility — Indrajit fights unseen. Each of these is a night-visitor or a shape-shifting feature, and each is shared with the control column or with the serotonergic column. They are consistent with the reading; they do not carry it.
7. The piśāca sub-profile. Gibbering, filth, nakedness, the cremation ground: against incoherent mumbling speech, urinary retention, and the disrobing that hyperthermia produces. This is scored 2 against A but is flagged in §IX, because the Sanskrit wording of Caraka’s piśāca-graha verses was not checked this cycle against the translations relied on.
VI. Against Pareidolia
The entheogenic-reading genre has a failure record, and this paper entered it knowingly. The controls it ran:
The list was fixed first. Sixteen features, two of them chosen because they were expected to contradict the reading. F6 (flesh and blood) scored zero everywhere. F16 (salivation, froth) contradicted the toxidrome and was scored against it.
Three columns, not one. A single-target match finds what it looks for. The serotonergic column exists to test whether the demon is a psychedelic being (it is not); the control column exists to test whether any drug is needed at all (for the night visitor, none is).
The famous demon returned negative. The asura, the antagonist everyone names first, carries nothing. A method that flatters every hypothesis would not have said so.
Intertextuality. The strongest version of the copying objection is that Caraka’s rākṣasa-graha is an epic image pressed onto patients, not a patient observed. The answer is in the cluster’s content: aversion to drink, sleeplessness, strength while fasting are clinical signs with no place in a story. A poet copying a poet does not add “hates drinks.” Conversely, the epic features — night, flesh, shape-shifting — are the ones with the weakest physiological anchor, and the reading was withdrawn for them.
The mania alternative. Contemporary Ayurvedic psychiatry reads the rākṣasa-graha cluster as mania or as antisocial disorder, and the mapping is respectable: insomnia, hyperactivity, aggression, and a “shooram” grandiosity fit both.25 Delirium and mania are distinguished clinically by course and by insight — hours to days against weeks, hallucinated hostile presences against elevated mood — and Caraka’s text gives the onset as sudden and the course as unpredictable, which fits both. The paper does not decide between them. It records that the cluster is toxidrome-shaped, that mania is an equally available explanation for the same shape, and that the datura-specific claim is therefore underdetermined by the text.
The anachronism objection. Receptor categories are modern; the texts knew none. Correct, and the paper uses them only as a way of naming two clusters of bodily and experiential signs that the tradition itself kept apart — in its ritual assignments, in its lexicon, and in its medical taxonomy. The receptor is a label for a distinction the texts already drew.
What would falsify it. A classical passage that assigns the rākṣasa-graha a benign emotional register. A demonstration that the Ci. 9/20–21 cluster is borrowed verbatim from an earlier non-medical source. A reading of unmatta in the lexica that excludes the plant. Any of these would move the finding from rhyme to coincidence, and the register in §IX is built to receive them.
VII. What This Is Not
The argument is not that demonology is really pharmacology. It is not that the beings are unreal, nor that the traditions were deceived, nor that anyone was on anything. A vision’s physiological signature — if one were established, and this paper establishes at most a rhyme — settles nothing about the vision’s meaning. The demonologies remain what they are: moral cosmology, the ethics of pride and predation, the sociology of forest and stranger, the theology of order and its enemies. The paper asks only why the possessing demon and the poisoned body share a physiology, and it answers: because the tradition that described both filed them under the same word.
The Institute’s rule holds here as everywhere: rhyme, never intent.
Counter-case
The strongest version of the standard view. Demonology is moral psychology and cultural memory, not report. The asura encodes the sociology of rival clans and the ethics of pride; the rākṣasa encodes the real dangers of forest, night, and stranger — and, in the historian’s reading, the forest peoples themselves, othered by an expanding agrarian order.26 The consistency of the features comes from intertextuality: poets copying poets, physicians copying poets, a lexicon copying both. The night visitor needs no plant, and the paper concedes it. The seized body needs no plant either: mania produces the same cluster, and the physicians who wrote the cluster knew dhattūra perfectly well and had a separate category for it. The receptor categories are imported into texts that knew nothing of them, and the feature list — however sincerely pre-registered — was compiled by someone who already suspected what he would find. If the correlation survives only because the list was tuned, the paper must discover that and say so.
The paper’s reply is §III’s decomposition and §IV’s negative. But the counter-case is not refuted; it is bounded. What remains after it is a narrow finding: a medical description of possession that is shaped like a toxidrome, a lexicon that names the plant with the disease, and a ritual system that assigned the deliriant to the hostile register and never to the divine one.
VIII. Findings
- The Indic demonological record holds two distinct demon-profiles: a night visitor (narrative stratum) and a seized body (medical stratum).
- The seized-body cluster — Caraka Ci. 9/20–21, rākṣasa-graha — is toxidrome-shaped: 8 of 8 on the discriminating subset against anticholinergic delirium, 4 of 8 against non-pharmacological delirium, 0 of 8 against serotonergic states.
- The night-visitor cluster is explained at least as well by sleep paralysis and hypnagogia as by any drug; the reading claims nothing for it beyond membership in the delirium class.
- The serotonergic column scores 22%. Whatever the possessing demon is, it is not a psychedelic being. The two-register hypothesis survives at exactly that strength.
- The asura carries no physiological signature (2 of 30). It is political theology.
- The agenda’s working figure of 80% is not reproduced; 72/59/22 replaces it, and the argument rests on the gaps, not the totals.
- Datura-specificity is not established. The specific claim is delirium; datura is the tradition’s named deliriant (unmatta), lexically paired with the disease and ritually assigned to the hostile register.
- The tantric procedures for covert administration, the medical category for madness of invisible external origin, and the toxidrome-shaped demon assigned to that category form a closed loop. It is a rhyme. It is reported as one.
IX. Claims Register
Status codes: V-P verified against a primary text in a standard translation this cycle; V-S verified against a secondary or clinical source this cycle; U unverified — relied on a translation summary, an earlier synthesis, or memory, and must be checked before citation.

Stakes
The Institute’s Civilizational Extraction Engine argues that a sacred pharmacology was erased from the record of the traditions it informed. If so, its fingerprints should survive where erasure could not reach — in the beings the erased experience produced. Demonology is the least guarded archive: nobody protects the demons. This paper found the fingerprint where it looked, and found it fainter and more specific than the agenda promised: not in the asura, not in the epic’s night visitor, but in the physician’s case-note and in the lexicon. It also disciplined the SICI reading method against its hardest case and let the method return three negatives — the asura, the night visitor, the 80%. The thread is stronger for it.
